Advanced medical technologies are becoming a crucial part of the healthcare ecosystem, enabling better prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care for patients. However, ensuring that patients continue to receive the best possible options requires a fundamental shift in the way the healthcare industry operates – from governmental and regional regulations and frameworks that approve access to innovative technologies to healthcare professionals using MedTech to help people stay healthy.

Michèle Paque from PwC sat down with Sabrina Suetens, Managing Director at beMedTech, and Prof. Damien Gruson, Head of the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Cliniques Universitaires Saint Luc, to discuss how they see the role of innovative technology in healthcare from their unique perspectives from industry and academia.

Sabrina believes that the future of healthcare is personalised, predictive and proactive, and that MedTech is at the heart of the innovation required to ensure this becomes the standard. However, she questions whether we have the knowledge, people and incentives to ensure this transformation happens quickly and smoothly.

“Medical technologies are at the heart of healthcare innovation, from groundbreaking devices to the data they generate. Together, they enable earlier diagnoses, more personalised treatments and better outcomes for patients.”

Sabrina Suetens, Managing Director, beMedTech

Healthcare is becoming more decentralised thanks to emerging MedTech solutions according to Damien. For example, sensors worn by patients are giving us more prevention predictive and detection power, enabling us to support patients as they engage with their disease as well as generating large quantities of data that boosts our understanding.

Will MedTech and the data it generates replace human intelligence? No, according to both Sabrina and Damien. Emerging technologies aren’t here to replace human intelligence and healthcare professionals, but to reinforce their skills and empower them to focus on providing better patient care.

“We shouldn’t be afraid of innovation: it’s a tool to help us face the challenges ahead. Instead, we should embrace innovation, find ways to make it scalable and inclusive, and benefit from it.”
